Algeria and Egypt Forge Deeper Labor, Employment, and Social Security Ties in Geneva

DZWatch has learned that Algeria's Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, engaged in significant bilateral discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, Hassan Raddad Ibrahim El Sayed. The meeting took place on Tuesday, June 2nd, on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, which runs from June 1 to 12, 2026. The Algerian Permanent Mission's Chargé d'Affaires to the UN Office in Geneva, Bektach Massinissa, and delegations from both countries were also present.

The high-level meeting served as a crucial platform to assess and advance Algerian-Egyptian collaboration across vital sectors including labor, employment, and social security. Discussions underscored the mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral partnership and expanding its scope to serve shared interests. Both ministers emphasized the importance of continued coordination on matters of common concern, particularly within the framework of the Algerian-Egyptian Joint Higher Committee. Expert teams from both nations are also set to further analyze social security dossiers.

The talks explored opportunities for cooperation in several key economic sectors and investigated avenues for leveraging reciprocal expertise in training and qualification. This strategic alignment aims to bolster economic integration and reinforce the enduring partnership between Algeria and Egypt. The officials further delved into both countries' experiences in vocational training, focusing on aligning curricula with labor market demands, integrating modern technologies, and refining training and qualification mechanisms to enhance employability. A significant segment of the discussions involved presenting Algeria's successful strategies in combating the informal economy and mitigating its socio-economic impacts. This included adopting diverse social protection and support mechanisms, alongside adapting to labor market transformations by fostering new forms of employment.

Concluding the constructive dialogue, both parties expressed profound satisfaction with the robust state of Algerian-Egyptian relations. They reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to ongoing consultation, coordination, and the continuous development of bilateral cooperation, ultimately serving the collective interests of the two sisterly nations and their peoples.
