Algeria Consolidates Strategic Partnership with China Baowu Group for Green Steel Industry
Algeria is actively strengthening its industrial landscape through significant international collaboration, as evidenced by recent high-level meetings between Algerian ministers and a delegation from the China Baowu Group, one of the world's largest steel producers. These discussions, held in Algiers, align with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives to bolster external cooperation, expand partnership opportunities, and promote investment to enhance the sector's openness to international markets and support national economic development objectives. The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, affirmed that the historical and strategic relations between Algeria and China form a solid foundation for robust economic partnerships, reiterating the energy sector's commitment to supporting Chinese investments, particularly the proposed green steel project.
Central to these discussions is a strategic industrial project to establish an integrated complex for producing low-carbon reduced iron and green steel in Algeria, in partnership with the National Iron Company (SNS). This initiative will strategically utilize Algeria's abundant national energy resources, including natural gas and renewable energies, in conjunction with cutting-edge industrial technologies focused on decarbonization. The Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, underscored the hydrocarbons sector's dedication to fostering quality partnerships with major global industrial groups to facilitate technology transfer, localize strategic industries, and enhance local content. National entities such as Sonelgaz and Sonatrach are prepared to support the project by assessing and meeting its energy requirements and providing natural gas, petroleum, petrochemical products, raw materials, and industrial solutions for emission reduction.
The partnership highlights Algeria's significant assets, including substantial energy resources, a developed natural gas infrastructure, and highly skilled national competencies in transformation industries, along with Sonatrach's environmental programs for carbon capture and storage. The China Baowu Group delegation acknowledged the clear governmental will to strengthen cooperation and partnership, viewing Algeria's stable business climate as a key incentive for investment. The Chinese group expressed its readiness to transfer its global expertise and modern technologies to Algeria, thereby supporting the development of a low-carbon iron and steel industry and enhancing the competitiveness of Algerian products in line with the nation's commitments to energy transition and sustainable development.
