Sonatrach Launches Strategic ‘Kafra Sud-Est 1’ Exploration in Niger

Sonatrach's exploration subsidiary has officially commenced the drilling of the strategic 'Kafra Sud-Est 1' exploratory well in the Agadez region of northern Niger. Located approximately 85 kilometers from Algeria's southern border, this project represents the first of its kind for an Algerian company in northern Niger, embodying a strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger. This initiative aims to foster the development of the hydrocarbons sector and enhance bilateral cooperation in this vital field, reflecting a key step in Algeria's regional energy strategy.

Despite formidable logistical and environmental challenges, including harsh climatic conditions and difficult terrain, the Algerian exploration company successfully transported all necessary drilling equipment, components, a workshop, and a fully equipped life base over 2,000 kilometers from Hassi Messaoud. This complex operation was completed in a record timeframe and within established deadlines, demonstrating exceptional Algerian engineering and project management capabilities. The drilling operation is anticipated to reach a depth of 3,900 meters, with preliminary positive indicators reportedly raising expectations for significant production outcomes.

A crucial aspect of the 'Kafra Sud-Est 1' project is the commitment to transferring Algerian expertise and technology to Niger. Through the training of Nigerien cadres and workers in the hydrocarbons sector, this initiative by INAFOR, a company with extensive experience in similar projects like those in Oman, will empower local capabilities. Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, previously underlined the importance of the 'Kafra' field, noting Sonatrach's established operations there and its "large and encouraging" results. Similarly, Nigerien Minister of Petroleum, Hamadou Tini, has commended the project, viewing it as a testament to the unprecedented and strategic level of relations between the two nations, further solidified by various joint projects and agreements.
