Algeria’s Integrated Phosphate Project Enters Realization Phase, Boosting Strategic Output

Algeria's Integrated Phosphate Project has moved into its realization phase following the signing of strategic contracts with international partners. This major industrial and strategic undertaking involves the Sonatrach group and the Algerian Fertilizers Group, collaborating with Italy's SAIPEM and China's CHEC. The project is designed to valorize Algeria's rich mining resources, diversify the national economy, and strengthen both economic and food sovereignty, positioning the country as a significant regional and international hub for phosphate production and processing.

Upon its operational entry, the project is anticipated to produce approximately 6 million tons annually of enriched phosphates and 4 million tons per year of various phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers. Additionally, it will yield strategic industrial materials such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and ammonia. The first quantities of enriched phosphate are expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2027, with fertilizer production slated to commence in the fourth quarter of the same year. This ambitious endeavor is supported by an integrated industrial and logistical system, spanning from the Djebel Onk mine in Tebessa, through processing units in Oued El Kébrit in Souk Ahras, and extending to the port of Annaba for national and international distribution.

This integrated project is expected to deliver substantial economic and social benefits for Algeria. It will contribute significantly to meeting the national agricultural sector's demand for fertilizers and enhancing food security. Furthermore, it is projected to raise the added value of national resources, unlock new avenues for non-hydrocarbon exports, and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. The initiative also aims to bolster local development, fortify the national industrial fabric, facilitate technology transfer, cultivate Algerian expertise, and promote local content and national subcontracting, solidifying Algeria's standing in the global fertilizers and mining industries.
