Niger, Algeria develop broad industrial and energy cooperation
Algerian Prime Minister Seifi Ghrieb, on a visit to Niger mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, oversaw the official launch of drilling for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploratory well in the Kafra oil field. During this occasion, Prime Minister Ghrieb affirmed that this initiative marks a new phase in strengthening the strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger. He emphasized Algeria's ambition to establish an integrated and sustainable industrial partnership, going beyond the oil sector to achieve comprehensive industrial integration between the two nations.
This expanded cooperation involves the state-owned companies Sonatrach and SONIDEP, covering a wide range of activities from exploration, development, and production to drilling, refining, petrochemicals, distribution, and marketing of petroleum products. The partnership also includes crucial areas such as training, technology transfer, and capacity building. Beyond hydrocarbons, joint efforts are underway in infrastructure, health, vocational training, higher education, digitalization, trade, transport, and finance, underscoring a commitment to practical collaboration in strategic sectors. The logistical feat of transporting the 2000-horsepower ENF-13 drilling rig from Algeria to Kafra further demonstrates Algeria's dedication to the project.
The Prime Minister linked the bilateral cooperation to a wider vision of enhancing African energy integration, noting that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project represents a natural extension of this collaboration, strategically connecting energy and development interests across several African nations. Algeria aims to build African energy partnerships that serve sustainable development goals and support continental integration. This approach transforms political rapprochement into tangible economic interests, positioning Algeria as a partner focused on investment, expertise transfer, and capacity building, and leveraging Niger as a strategic geographical link between North and West Africa. This partnership is designed to be a model for African cooperation, emphasizing project implementation and self-reliance in the region.
