Cereal Office Plans Early for Next Agricultural Season

The Algerian Interprofessional Office of Cereals (OAIC) has announced the extension of grain collection operations until September 30, 2026. This decision coincides with the commencement of preparations for the upcoming 2026-2027 plowing and sowing campaign. This proactive measure by the OAIC is designed to ensure the continuous flow of collection processes and to guarantee the timely availability of seeds and necessary agricultural inputs for producers.

The extension of the collection period is considered a positive step, offering farmers who still hold quantities of grain an additional opportunity to deliver their produce through official channels. This approach facilitates a more accurate assessment of the national harvest and aids in organizing a precise inventory, which is crucial for national food security. Hasan Karim, head of the National Organization for Agriculture and Food Security, underscored the significance of this phase, noting it simultaneously addresses the conclusion of the 2025-2026 agricultural season's harvest and the early planning for the subsequent year. The OAIC plans to utilize the current harvest, including grain earmarked for seed production, to meet the demands of the upcoming season.

Ensuring the timely availability of seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs is paramount for the success of the new season, with preparations focused on avoiding any delays. The "Rafik" loan program is recognized as an important financial instrument supporting producers by covering costs, and efforts are underway to streamline its application process. Furthermore, the development of robust storage infrastructure, particularly in warmer regions, and the adoption of digitization are key initiatives set to enhance the management and efficiency of the grain sector, from tracking requests and inventory to real-time distribution. These integrated efforts collectively aim to foster a successful and organized launch for the 2026-2027 agricultural season, reinforcing Algeria's food security.
