Villarreal Academy Launches in Algeria, Targets 900 Youth Talents
The Villarreal Academy in Algeria has officially commenced operations, a partnership project with Spanish football club Villarreal. Led by Mohamed Salmi, the academy aims to significantly elevate the training of Algerian football talents by adopting an internationally recognized Spanish methodology. This initiative, which saw its official launch on September 1, is designed to provide opportunities for aspiring players from various regions across Algeria.
Initial selection trials are set to take place on August 15 across multiple locations, including the Mediterranean Village in Oran, Dely Brahim University, and the Higher School of Sports and Technology in Algiers. During these trials, the academy plans to select between 800 and 900 young players across different age categories. Mr. Salmi highlighted that the Spanish training approach was chosen following a comprehensive study, recognizing it as one of the world's leading methodologies for football development.
The partnership with Villarreal involves the Spanish club providing technical expertise and methodology, while also contributing to the visibility and marketing of players both domestically and internationally. The academy will benefit from direct supervision by David Navarro, Technical Director of the Villarreal International Academy, alongside Technical Coordinator Amine Kabir. A dedicated Spanish technical director will facilitate operations between Algeria and Spain to ensure consistent application of the adopted technical framework. Furthermore, a group of 22 players will be chosen to represent the academy in friendly matches against Villarreal youth teams in Spain.
Looking ahead, the Villarreal Academy plans a gradual expansion, with future branches envisioned for Bejaia, Constantine, and Annaba, aiming to reach talent across all Algerian regions, particularly in isolated areas. While initial activities will focus on training without residential programs, the academy intends to offer internal accommodation for minor players at the Mediterranean Village in Oran starting from the next season, subject to parental consent. Mohamed Salmi, who personally funds the project within Algeria, also affirmed his commitment to cover the expenses for two talented players annually if their families face financial constraints, expressing gratitude to the Presidency of the Republic for supporting projects from Algerian expatriates.
