Prime Minister Ghrieb Launches Kafra 1 Drilling in Niger

Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb officially launched drilling operations for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploration well in the Agadez region of Niger. This event, where Prime Minister Ghrieb co-presided with his Nigerien counterpart Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, was undertaken on behalf of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The launch signifies a new phase in the growing strategic energy partnership between Algeria and Niger, building on a framework established by the two nations' presidents.

The project involves a multidimensional partnership between Algeria's Sonatrach, through its subsidiary Enafor, and Niger's Sonidep. This comprehensive cooperation spans various aspects of the oil and gas sector, including research, exploration, development, and production, as well as drilling services, refining, petrochemicals, and the distribution and marketing of petroleum products. It also encompasses training, technology transfer, and capacity building, with Algeria committing to undertake major maintenance work on the Zinder refinery and continue evaluating new oil blocks in Niger, such as Bilma. A significant logistical and technical achievement involved mobilizing and transporting a 2000 horsepower drilling rig (ENF-13) from Algeria to the Kafra site.

This initiative is considered a cornerstone of President Tebboune's approach to constructing an African energy partnership. The aim is to support sustainable development objectives and strengthen continental integration, with plans extending to establishing integrated and sustainable industrial partnerships through joint ventures. This balanced and comprehensive cooperation model, exemplified by the Kafra project, is seen as a natural extension into multilateral dimensions, including the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, identified as a strategic project vital for African integration. The vision also promotes transforming border zones into areas of shared cooperation and development, thereby enhancing security and stability across the Sahel region.
