Sonatrach Solidifies African Energy Status with Niger Border Operations

Sonatrach is consolidating its status as a major African energy player through significant operations near the Algerian-Nigerien border. This deployment of Algerian expertise in the oil and gas sector is strategically positioned to enhance the company's international reach. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has characterized Sonatrach as "one of the powerful levers of national sovereignty," underscoring its crucial role in the nation's economic landscape. The initiative represents an ambitious long-term investment and expansion strategy.

A central element of this strategy is the "Kafra Sud-Est 1" megaproject, an exploration well located just 85 kilometers from the Algerian frontier. Brahim Hammoudi, CEO of Enafor, a key Sonatrach subsidiary, outlined the bilateral commitment, stating that Enafor's priority is to establish a lasting presence in Niger through sustainable cooperation. This large-scale operation prioritizes rigorous adherence to safety, quality, performance, and environmental protection standards, alongside safeguarding personnel and equipment. This strategic partnership also promotes co-development and experience sharing.

Further cementing bilateral ties, Enafor and Sonidep, Niger's national oil company, signed a memorandum of understanding on June 2 to explore the creation of a specialized drilling joint venture. Rabah Bouchak, director of Sipex (Sonatrach's Niger subsidiary), highlighted the geostrategic importance of this project, calling it a "new challenge" for Sonatrach. This builds on previous successful investments in neighboring countries, including Libya, where several oil wells have been explored and identified. Sonatrach's ambitious roadmap for the next two years includes the successive launch of four major exploration wells in northern Niger, encompassing the promising Kafra site, aiming to further elevate its standing in the continental energy sector.
