Algeria Leads Region in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery
Algerian medical teams have achieved significant milestones in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, exemplified by 107 major endoscopic interventions at the November 1st, 1954 University Hospital in Oran. This advancement was a central topic at a recent international meeting held at the hospital, where specialists from several countries gathered to support Algeria's pioneering experience in the field. The event underscored the nation's growing expertise and leadership in highly specialized surgical procedures.
Professor Gasmi Rachid, head of thoracic surgery at the Oran University Hospital, revealed the department's pioneering accomplishments nationally. These 107 major endoscopic operations included 32 precise lung tissue surgeries, marking a first for endoscopic interventions of this type. Other complex procedures encompassed lung lobectomy, partial lung resection, and precise mediastinal surgeries such as thymectomy, showcasing a broad spectrum of advanced capabilities.
The adoption of modern techniques for these complex operations significantly improves patient outcomes. Historically, such interventions necessitated large thoracic incisions or sternotomy, involving metallic expanders that posed risks and considerable pain. Now, thanks to state-of-the-art methods using video assistance, these procedures are conducted through three small openings, each not exceeding 1.5 centimeters, with a maximum incision of 3 centimeters. This minimally invasive approach dramatically reduces hospital stays, accelerates patient recovery and rehabilitation, and substantially decreases post-operative pain.
The First International Days of Endoscopic Thoracic Surgery, supervised by Professor Gasmi Rachid and coordinated with the Algerian Society of Endoscopic Surgery and the Faculty of Medicine, focused on "Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery in Algeria: Current Developments and Future Prospects." The international gathering saw participation from experts and specialized doctors hailing from Turkey, Canada, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Germany, further cementing Oran's role as a hub for medical exchange and development in this specialized area.
