Algiers Hosts 18th International Comics Festival

The 18th International Festival of Comics (Fibda) has officially opened in Algiers, inaugurated by Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda. The festival, operating under the slogan “The graphic novel, crossroads of drawing and verb,” is scheduled to run from October 1 to 5. It features participating artists from 13 countries, a detail that reaffirms the international scope of this event dedicated to the ninth art. Minister Bendouda expressed satisfaction with the festival's ongoing progression, highlighting its importance as a significant cultural gathering and a source of pride for Algeria.
The festival has received recognition from UNESCO, with its inclusion on the organization's Policy Monitoring Platform, which is dedicated to tracking cultural experiences and practices globally. This acknowledgment underscores the festival’s importance as a specialized and exceptional cultural event within the region. The Minister attributed this recognition to the sustained efforts by Algerians and the festival’s organizers since its establishment in 2008, a testament to Algeria's rich cultural and artistic heritage.
The Fibda program includes Algerian and international authors and comic artists presenting new productions, alongside homages, masterclasses, and children's workshops. Intellectuals, authors, screenwriters, and artists will also lead meetings and conferences related to the ninth art. Tributes were paid to notable figures in Algerian comic art, and awards were presented to laureates in both international and national competitions. This included Anya Saci for “Judo Cat” and Ryad Boutmeur for “Clothes Men” in the under-16 category, and Slimane Ouchen for “Fatma N’Summer,” Sabrine Imène Mekali for “Ultima Beyond the stars,” and Melissa Bounouniche for “Beyond the Tide” in the “Best Project” category for those over 16. The festival, organized by the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts, is open to the public daily, offering free access to fine arts students, groups from children's centers, and individuals with specific needs.
