Red Meat Agreements Secure Algerian Market for Ramadan

Algerian entities have signed two cooperation agreements with leading Spanish institutions in the red meat sector, reinforcing efforts to ensure a sufficient supply for the market, especially in anticipation of Ramadan. The agreements were formalized in Algiers, involving the Algerian Red Meat Company (Alviar) and the National Union of Red Meat Importers alongside Spanish partners.

One agreement, signed with the National Union of Red Meat Importers, is specifically designed to guarantee the necessary quantities of meat for the Algerian market, addressing seasonal demand such as that during Ramadan. The second accord, with Alviar, aims to leverage Spanish expertise to revitalize national meat production, improve livestock breeds, and establish modern slaughterhouses. This framework seeks to enhance information and experience exchange, as well as collaboration in logistics.

Algeria's objective for this partnership extends beyond simple trade, emphasizing production, investment, technology transfer, training, and value creation. Practical programs are planned to bring Spanish expertise to Algeria, focusing on animal nutrition, reproduction, veterinary health, herd tracking, and digitalization. Additionally, cooperation will develop in areas like butchery, processing, packaging, and the cold chain, with a vision to build an integrated supply chain and explore joint Algerian-Spanish projects spanning the entire red meat sector.

Spain, a major supplier to Algeria, has expressed its commitment to supporting Algeria's livestock sector development, prioritizing sustainable bilateral cooperation over mere transactional exchanges. Official data indicates Algeria is the primary destination for Spain's beef and sheep exports outside the European Union, with imports valued at over 200 million Euros in the first half of 2026, building on 40,000 tons imported in 2025. This enduring trade relationship forms a strong foundation for the newly established partnership, designed to further enhance food security and market stability in Algeria.
