Port of Mostaganem Reclaims Vital Areas, Improves Performance

The Port of Mostaganem has launched an extensive operation to clear goods that have been abandoned on its docks, with some dating back to 1993. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the customs inspection of the wilaya, seeks to clean port spaces and resolve the long-standing issue of deteriorated cargo, some of which has been immobilised for over three decades. The primary aim is to recover considerable strategic areas within the port that were previously rendered unusable by unclaimed freight.
This significant clean-up effort extends beyond simply clearing space; it represents a move to finalize a file that has remained open for decades, impacting the port's overall efficiency. The presence of long-stay freight not only constrained port performance but also raised regulatory, security, and environmental concerns. By evacuating these outdated consignments, critical zones are regaining their operational capacity, thereby directly contributing to the port's modernization and enhanced operational flow.
The operation aligns with broader directives from Algeria's leadership, specifically following instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a meeting focused on reorganizing the port sector. These directives, reinforced by the Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, advocate for a more rational use of national infrastructure. This particular action also supports the recent decision to specialize the Port of Mostaganem for import operations by public companies, requiring clear docks and available storage capacity as a technical prerequisite for its new vocation. Officials from the Port of Mostaganem assure that new monitoring mechanisms will be implemented to regulate the duration goods remain on the docks, preventing a recurrence of the long-term abandonment phenomenon.
