Continental Pharmacist Bodies Discuss African Health Sovereignty in Algiers

Algeria recently hosted a pivotal meeting involving the National Council of Pharmacists and the Joint Council of African Pharmacists Associations. The discussions aimed at advancing continental cooperation and confronting challenges within Africa's pharmacy sector and pharmaceutical industry. This significant gathering occurred on the sidelines of the second edition of the International Day of the National Council of Pharmacists, which took place on October 5th.

The meeting was presided over by Dr. Noureddine Metioui, President of Algeria's National Council of Pharmacists, and Dr. Mostafa El-Aroussi, the current President of the African body. A delegation comprising representatives from pharmacists' associations across several African nations participated. Key topics included avenues for enhancing coordination and exchanging expertise among professional bodies, alongside an examination of prominent challenges facing the profession and pharmaceutical industry throughout the continent.

A central focus of the discussions was the means to bolster health sovereignty within Africa, a theme that also underpinned the second International Day of the National Council of Pharmacists. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reinforce partnerships among African pharmaceutical organizations and to intensify consultation on shared concerns, thereby supporting the overall development of the health sector in African countries.
