General Motors Explores Algerian Industrial Partnership for Local Production

General Motors, the American automotive manufacturer, is actively exploring industrial cooperation opportunities in Algeria. A delegation from the group, led by Rohan Fernandes, Chairman and CEO of General Motors for Egypt and Africa, met with Algeria's Minister of Industry, Farid Kourtel, on October 13, 2026, in Algiers. The discussions centered on potential partnerships, particularly concerning local production and the development of the automotive subcontracting sector.
This initiative aligns with Algeria's broader objective to cultivate an automotive industry founded on local component manufacturing. The Algerian Ministry of Industry underscored the importance of enhancing national industry, promoting local fabrication, and developing robust subcontracting activities. Emphasis was placed on reinforcing local integration to foster a competitive national mechanical industry.
While the exchanges with General Motors remain exploratory, and no definitive industrial agreement or factory project has been announced, the engagement signifies continued international interest in Algeria's industrial development. Such cooperation with global groups could contribute positively to the national drive to expand industrial capacities, building on efforts to develop local manufacturing capabilities beyond assembly operations.
