New York Times Names Oran Top Global Destination for 2026

The prestigious American newspaper, The New York Times, has prominently featured Oran, designating the Algerian city as a top global destination for 2026. Ranked seventh in the publication's annual selection of "52 Places to Go in 2026," Oran receives international recognition for its historical heritage, dynamic cultural scene, and growing tourist appeal. This acknowledgment from New York Times Travel on Instagram specifically highlights the Mediterranean port city's cultural revival, blending its rich past with new artistic and nightlife energy.

The New York Times underscored Oran's diverse architectural landscape, showcasing influences from Ottoman, Spanish, and French eras. Perched on hills offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the city features numerous historical sites. Among these is the centenary Regional Theater of Oran, recently restored and now hosting a vibrant program of contemporary performances, reflecting the city's ongoing cultural dynamism.

Oran's transformed waterfront, with its distinctive Art Deco balconies, was also noted by the American daily, now featuring cafes, galleries, and open-air concerts that contribute to the city's animated urban life. Additionally, the report recognized Oran as the birthplace of Raï, a popular Algerian music genre that emerged in the 1920s. The annual National Raï Festival, held in summer, further solidifies Oran's reputation as a significant center for rhythm in North Africa, a distinction emphasized by the New York Times as Algeria continues to assert itself as a compelling tourist destination.
