Saharan Agriculture Project Targets Food Security with Italy

A significant Algerian-Italian partnership project aimed at producing cereals and dry legumes is actively developing Saharan agriculture in Timimoun. The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Sid Ali Khaldi, highlighted this initiative during a visit to the Amguidène agricultural perimeter, located 200 kilometers south of Timimoun. Minister Khaldi emphasized that this project is among the most promising investment ventures in Saharan agriculture and represents a strategic future pillar for enhancing national food security.
Spanning an expansive area of 36,000 hectares, the project is characterized by its integrated approach, leveraging the abundant potential of Algeria's southern regions in conjunction with Italian expertise in cereal and dry legume cultivation. The comprehensive scope covers all stages of production, from the initial seed production and crop cultivation to subsequent storage and industrial processing, thereby contributing to the strengthening of Algeria's national food industry.
Beyond its agricultural output, the initiative is poised to generate new job opportunities for local youth and serve as a catalyst for regional development. The Algerian authorities underscore the project's profound importance, with the ministerial department committed to providing full support and deploying experts from specialized national institutes to assist its implementation. This endeavor further builds upon Algeria's notable experience in Saharan agriculture.
