ANIE President: Increased Voter, Candidate Numbers Disprove Abstention Claims

Saad Arous, President of the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE), announced a significant increase in new voter registrations and candidate applications for the local elections scheduled for November 28. This rise, compared to the 2021 local elections, actively disproves allegations of voter abstention. Arous emphasized that the recorded facts and available figures contradict such claims, demonstrating substantial citizen involvement and political forces competing for representation.

The electoral process operates under a robust framework, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stressing adherence to the Constitution, law, and the protection of rights and freedoms. ANIE, in its role, is committed to safeguarding voter choice by ensuring neutrality, transparency, and equal opportunities. Arous further clarified that any rejected candidacy files were legally justified, with concerned individuals retaining the right to appeal to the competent judicial authorities, and candidate replacement procedures are ongoing until October 28.

Preparations for the local elections commenced following President Tebboune's convocation of the electoral body. ANIE has activated its central and local structures, coordinating efforts across all stages of the electoral process, including voter list review, candidacy file examination, campaigning, and vote counting. This comprehensive approach ensures methodical preparation, adherence to procedures, and respect for legal deadlines. Underscoring the national importance of elections, ANIE has also engaged in dialogues with political parties represented in parliament, fostering an open environment for discussion and incorporating their concerns and proposals, with the law serving as the ultimate reference for all actions and decisions.
