Algiers Declaration Guiding Moscow Gas Export Summit

The 8th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is scheduled to convene in Moscow from October 25 to 27, where the "Declaration of Algiers" will serve as a foundational reference document. This declaration originated from the 7th GECF Summit held previously in the Algerian capital. The upcoming meeting will bring together heads of state and government amidst ongoing global energy sector shifts.
The enduring relevance of the "Declaration of Algiers" is evident in its continued use as a guiding text for the GECF. Key commitments outlined in the declaration will be maintained and further developed during the Moscow summit, including the affirmation of member states' sovereign rights over their gas resources. It also emphasizes the importance of constructive dialogue between gas-producing and consuming nations to foster global energy security and create balanced, reliable natural gas markets.
Furthermore, the Declaration of Algiers underscores support for all countries, particularly in Africa, in their efforts to combat energy precarity and develop their energy resources to achieve prosperity. The declaration also includes a condemnation of unilateral economic restrictions imposed without United Nations Security Council approval, as well as the extraterritorial application of national laws and regulations that negatively impact gas development, trade, and the security of supply for GECF member countries. Algeria, as a key member, contributes to the GECF, which collectively holds nearly 70% of the world's proven gas reserves and accounts for significant shares of global gas production and exports.
