Control Agents Enforce Price Transparency, Shut Down Non-Compliant Algiers Businesses

Control agents and fraud suppression personnel from the Directorate of Commerce of Algiers Governorate have significantly intensified their field operations. These efforts aim to monitor the availability of various products, particularly widely consumed goods, and to track prices in markets and commercial establishments. The overarching objectives include organizing commercial activity, ensuring the consistent supply of essential products to the market, and protecting the purchasing power of citizens. A key focus of these ongoing checks, which cover food product stores, vegetable, and fruit vendors across the capital's commercial inspectorates, is to verify that traders comply with the mandatory requirement to inform consumers about the prices of goods offered for sale.
The Ministry of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation has underscored the obligation for prices and tariffs on products and services to be displayed clearly and legibly, in accordance with legislative provisions. Non-compliance with this requirement can lead to judicial prosecution, administrative closure of the commercial establishment, and seizure of the offending products. During routine supervisory operations, control agents also monitor prices applied by traders to ensure their conformity with current regulations, especially for goods subject to price fixing or capping, while also confirming the availability of various basic materials. These inspections play a crucial role in closely observing market conditions, identifying potential abuses such as undisclosed prices, illegal commercial practices, or attempts to exploit consumer needs through unjustified price increases. Their presence also serves to remind traders of the necessity to adhere to established commercial rules, thereby ensuring transparency in transactions and upholding consumer rights.
These intensified oversight measures are part of broader efforts to strengthen market controls and mitigate unjustified price hikes that have burdened families. The increased field monitoring, alongside regulatory measures concerning the prices of certain goods, has reportedly contributed to a reduction in violations and a noticeable decrease in some prices recently. Citizens have expressed appreciation for these initiatives, recognizing that effective price control and mandatory display are fundamental consumer rights that promote transparency in buying and selling, enabling informed comparisons and choices. The public views continued regulation as essential for market stability, asserting that protecting purchasing power involves not only product availability but also affordability for all societal segments, especially low-income households. Commercial services have affirmed their commitment to implementing necessary legal procedures, including mandatory price display, and have urged all economic operators to strictly adhere to these obligations to avoid punitive actions, including administrative store closures.
