New Electric Vehicle Charging Network Set for 2027 Activation

Algeria has successfully installed 1,000 electric vehicle charging points across the country, a development announced by Minister of Energy Mourad Adjal on October 20. These installations are strategically located in service stations along the East-West highway and in various cities, enhancing national infrastructure. The commissioning of this extensive network is projected for 2027, coinciding with the establishment of a national tariff structure for charging services.

This initiative is a critical component of Algeria's broader commitment to fostering electric mobility and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. The Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies oversees this national program, with the Sonelgaz group leading its implementation. Once operational, the network is expected to serve as a decisive catalyst for the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide, supporting the country's environmental and energy goals.

The development of this charging infrastructure complements existing measures designed to encourage electric vehicle adoption, including an 80% reduction in customs duties and taxes for importers of electric vehicles less than three years old. Furthermore, this project aligns with Algeria's industrial ambitions, supporting local production of charging points that are already being exported and attracting new investments, such as the proposed electric vehicle factory by the Elsewedy Group. The Finance Law Project 2027 also extends VAT exemption to electricity production and distribution, reinforcing the nation's supportive energy policy framework.
