{"id":17196,"date":"2025-11-03T15:00:36","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T14:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=17196"},"modified":"2026-09-04T08:13:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T07:13:58","slug":"moscow-explains-abstention-on-western-sahara-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=17196","title":{"rendered":"Moscow Explains Abstention on Western Sahara Resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Moscow, November 3, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The Russian <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-external\" data-dzsl=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.dz\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/a> issued a statement today clarifying its decision to abstain from voting on a draft resolution concerning the Western Sahara during the recent <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-external\" data-dzsl=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations<\/a> <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-internal\" data-dzsl=\"internal\" href=\"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=67183\">Security Council<\/a> session.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry stated that Russia, along with China and Pakistan, abstained from voting on Resolution 2797, drafted by the <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-internal\" data-dzsl=\"internal\" href=\"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=65936\">United States<\/a>, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for one year.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the Russian Foreign Ministry attributed Moscow&#8217;s abstention to the fact that &#8220;the process of coordinating the draft resolution lacked transparency and proceeded at an unnecessarily rapid pace, preventing the consideration of all proposed amendments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The statement emphasized the importance of extending MINURSO&#8217;s mandate for a year, noting that its activities contribute to stability in the Western Sahara and the broader Sahel-Saharan region.
