Algiers, DZWatch<\/strong> – Former Minister and diplomat Abdelaziz Rahabi has responded to what he describes as misinterpretations of Algeria’s recent vote at the United Nations Security Council. Rahabi refuted claims that the vote signals a shift in Algeria’s foreign policy regarding the Middle East, arguing that such readings are overly simplistic and lack a nuanced understanding of Algeria’s position.<\/p>\n

“Diplomatic populism has overshadowed an objective reading of our position on the Palestinian issue,” Rahabi stated. He emphasized that Algeria had proposed the inclusion of a reference to the Palestinian state, which was subsequently approved by the members. “This matter is not merely technical; it is at the heart of the Palestinian problem, amidst Israel’s intransigence, the United States’ hesitation, and the frozen normalization process following the war on Gaza.”<\/p>\n

Rahabi further explained that Algeria took into account the humanitarian tragedy faced by the Palestinian people and the inability of their historical representatives to speak with a unified voice. He noted that Algeria, alongside Pakistan, carried the voices of Arab and Islamic groups, advocating for resolutions that best serve the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n

“Placing principles at the service of the nation’s interests is a balancing act that requires adaptation to circumstances, the balance of power, and each country’s ability to defend its positions before public opinion,” Rahabi asserted.<\/p>\n

The former minister defended Algeria’s stance and its recent vote at the Security Council, stating, “Our recent vote in the Council is in line with our principles, which are far from dogmatic. It is a harmony between our values and our positions.” He added that the slogan “land for peace” was a Palestinian demand in the past, and Algeria was among the first Arab League countries to support this position.<\/p>\n

Rahabi also addressed the roles of major global powers, particularly the United States, Russia, and China. He pointed out that the United States, as Israel’s primary and unconditional supporter, is uniquely positioned to exert influence and encourage Israel to respect a ceasefire, which Hamas has accepted and the Arab and Islamic world has largely welcomed.<\/p>\n
