Bissau, Guinea-Bissau<\/strong> \u2013 A military coup has reportedly taken place in Guinea-Bissau, just ahead of the expected announcement of closely contested presidential election results. A group of army officers announced their seizure of power earlier today.<\/p>\n

In a statement broadcast on state television, the officers declared the removal of President Umaro Sissoco Embal\u00f3 from office. They also announced the suspension of the electoral process, the closure of national borders, and the imposition of a curfew.<\/p>\n

General Denis Nhanca, commander of the presidential guard, stated that a \u201csupreme command for the restoration of order, composed of all branches of the military,\u201d had taken over \u201cthe administration of the country until further notice.\u201d He made the announcement from behind a table at military headquarters, surrounded by armed personnel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat prompted us to do this is to ensure security at the national level and also to restore order,\u201d General Nhanca reportedly stated.<\/p>\n

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire near the electoral commission headquarters, the presidential palace, and the Ministry of Interior prior to the announcement. Reports indicate that the gunfire lasted for approximately an hour before ceasing.<\/p>\n

As of yet, there have been no confirmed reports of casualties. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch<\/em> continues to monitor developments closely.<\/p>\n
