Copenhagen, Denmark<\/strong> \u2013 Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the United States’ perceived encroachment on Greenland’s sovereignty, following the announcement of a special US envoy to the semi-autonomous territory. The move has sparked diplomatic tensions and renewed scrutiny over Washington’s interest in the vast, strategically important island.<\/p>\n

Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen expressed his displeasure, stating he would summon the US ambassador for clarification. “I find the appointment and the accompanying statement unacceptable,” Rasmussen told local broadcaster TV 2. “As long as the Kingdom of Denmark consists of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland, we cannot accept attempts to undermine our sovereignty.”<\/p>\n

A joint statement released by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Premier, M\u00fate Bourup Egede, emphasized the importance of international law. “National borders and the sovereignty of states are enshrined in international law. These are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country, not even under the guise of international security,” the statement asserted.<\/p>\n

“Greenland belongs to its people, and the United States will not take it over,” the statement continued. “We expect respect for our shared territorial integrity.” Egede, in a message to Greenlanders on social media, reiterated that the appointment of a US envoy “changes nothing for us here at home.” He added, “We will determine our own future. Greenland is our country.”\n<\/p>\n

The European Commission has also voiced its strong support for Denmark. A spokesperson for the EU’s foreign affairs division stated that “maintaining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark, and respecting its borders, is fundamental for the European Union.”<\/p>\n

The US appointment follows repeated expressions of interest by President Trump in Greenland, including suggestions of purchasing the island. These overtures were previously met with strong rebukes from both Copenhagen and Nuuk.<\/em> The latest development signals a potential shift in US strategy towards the Arctic region, raising concerns about the future of Greenland’s relationship with both Denmark and the United States.<\/p>\n
