The poll, conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM), a state-affiliated institution, suggests a potential shift in public sentiment as diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis intensify.

According to Mikhail Mamonov, Deputy Head of VCIOM, 70% of the 1,600 respondents believe that 2026 will be a “more successful” year for Russia than the current one. Notably, 55% of those surveyed linked their optimism to the potential conclusion of what Moscow refers to as the “special military operation” in Ukraine.

“The main reason for optimism is the potential completion of the special military operation and the achievement of the stated goals, in line with the national interests defined by the President,” Mamonov stated during the presentation of the survey results.

While previous end-of-year polls emphasized Russian society’s support for President Vladimir Putin and the military objectives in Ukraine, this is the first time VCIOM has provided specific figures regarding the proportion of Russians who foresee an end to the conflict.

Mamonov highlighted several factors that could contribute to a potential peace agreement, including the ongoing Russian military campaign in Ukraine, the United States’ hesitation in funding Kyiv, and the European Union’s inability to fully compensate for the diminished US support, both financially and militarily. He added that reintegrating veterans of the “special military operation” into society and reconstructing Russian-controlled territories in Ukraine, as well as Russian border regions, would be priorities following the cessation of hostilities.

Independent polling by the Levada Center, designated as a “foreign agent” in Russia, indicates that approximately two-thirds of Russians support entering peace talks – the highest percentage since the start of the conflict. These findings suggest a growing desire for a resolution to the crisis.

The Kremlin announced today that President Vladimir Putin is actively involved in diplomatic efforts, signaling a possible move toward negotiations.

More Algeria articles on DZWatch

DZWatch – Your News Portal

Moscow, December 24, 2025 – A recent government survey indicates that a majority of Russians anticipate the end of the conflict in Ukraine by 2026.
