Aleppo, Syria<\/strong> – Syrian security forces successfully thwarted a planned suicide attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) in Aleppo on New Year’s Eve, according to a statement released by the Interior Ministry on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The ministry reported that the operation, aimed at disrupting planned New Year celebrations, resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to two others.<\/p>\n

“As part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, and following meticulous monitoring of ISIS cells, information was obtained regarding the group’s intention to carry out suicide attacks targeting New Year’s celebrations in several provinces, particularly Aleppo, by targeting churches and civilian gatherings,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

In response to the threat, the Interior Ministry implemented heightened security measures, including increased protection around churches, deployment of fixed and mobile patrols, and the establishment of checkpoints throughout the city.<\/p>\n

During a routine check at a checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj area of Aleppo, a police officer became suspicious of an individual later identified as an ISIS member. As the officer attempted to verify the individual’s identity, the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding the officer. The suspect then detonated an explosive device, injuring two other officers who were attempting to apprehend him.<\/p>\n

The incident highlights the continued threat posed by ISIS remnants in the region, despite territorial losses.<\/em> Authorities are continuing to maintain a heightened state of alert.<\/p>\n
