Copenhagen \u2013 The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, has called on the United States to cease its \u201cthreats against a historical ally,\u201d following repeated expressions from President Donald Trump regarding the United States\u2019 \u201cneed\u201d for Greenland.<\/p>\n
In a statement released yesterday, Frederiksen firmly addressed Trump’s persistent interest in the autonomous territory, stating, \u201cI must say clearly to the United States: it is completely unacceptable to suggest that the United States should control Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister emphasized that the United States possesses no right to annex any of the three constituent countries within the Kingdom of Denmark: Denmark proper, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.<\/p>\n
Frederiksen’s strong words come after Trump reiterated his administration’s perceived \u201cneed\u201d for the self-governing island. In comments to the press on Sunday, the US President stated, \u201cWe definitely need Greenland. We need it for security purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n
When questioned about whether the recent military operation in Venezuela could indicate potential US actions regarding Greenland, Trump responded cryptically during a phone interview with The Atlantic<\/em> magazine, \u201cThey will have to see for themselves; I really don\u2019t know.\u201d The US military apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on Saturday, transporting them to New York to face trial on charges of what Washington has termed \u201cnarco-terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n Since his re-election, President Trump has repeatedly voiced his desire to acquire Greenland, citing its mineral wealth and strategic location at the intersection of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.<\/p>\n The issue of Greenland’s status remains a sensitive topic<\/strong>, with Denmark determined to maintain its sovereignty over the territory. The Danish government has made it clear that Greenland is not for sale.<\/em><\/p>\n
