Algiers, Algeria<\/strong> \u2013 Algeria has maintained its position as the leading supplier of natural gas to Spain for the third consecutive year, according to data released today. This solidifies Algeria’s crucial role in European energy security.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that Algerian gas accounted for approximately 35% of Spain’s total gas imports throughout 2025, surpassing other major suppliers, including the United States, in terms of volume. This achievement underscores the reliability and stability of Algerian gas exports.<\/p>\n

The Spanish energy market experienced a significant decrease in Russian gas supplies, falling by an estimated 44%. This shift in the market landscape has allowed Algeria to strengthen its position as a key provider.<\/p>\n

Increased domestic demand within Spain also contributed to Algeria’s prominence.<\/em> Spain’s gas demand grew by 7.4% in 2025, reaching 372 terawatt-hours (TWh). A significant portion of this increase was driven by a surge in gas-fired power generation, which rose by 33.3% to 99.6 TWh. Furthermore, gas exports from Spain also climbed by 17.4% to 40.5 TWh, further emphasizing the need for a dependable gas supply.<\/p>\n

Spain’s regasification terminals received natural gas from 16 different sources, showcasing the country’s efforts to diversify its energy imports. Despite this diversification, Algeria continues to be the dominant supplier, highlighting its strategic importance to Spain’s energy needs.<\/p>\n

Madrid plays a vital role in European energy security by connecting pipeline networks and providing fuel for LNG vessels. LNG consumption for bunkering increased by 62% in 2025 compared to 2024, reflecting its increasing importance in reducing maritime transport emissions.<\/p>\n

Algeria aims to further enhance its presence in the European gas market through future investments by Sonatrach, targeting a production capacity of approximately 200 billion cubic meters per year to meet both domestic and international demand.<\/p>\n
