This marks a stark contrast to previous years, where water cuts often cast a shadow over religious holidays, highlighting the tangible success of the country's proactive approach to water security.

Algeria water security

The widespread availability of water during Eid, a period traditionally marked by a surge in consumption for household needs and post-sacrifice cleaning rituals, offered immense relief to families. Many recounted the simple yet profound scene of taps flowing normally, eliminating the need for pre-emptive water storage or constant monitoring of pressure drops. This stability, while partly aided by increased rainfall since the beginning of the year which boosted dam levels, is primarily a testament to Algeria's strategic investment in its national hydraulic system.

Experts underscore the significant progress made, noting an important improvement in the national hydraulic system's capacity. While acknowledging varied geographical distribution—with Eastern dams at approximately 58% capacity, Central dams around 20%, and Western volumes exceeding 40%—the game-changer has been the deployment of new seawater desalination plants. Installations in regions like Oran, Tipasa, Boumerdès, Bejaïa, and El Tarf have begun to transform the landscape, providing crucial additional volumes of potable water and markedly reducing reliance on dam reserves, which are often vulnerable to drought periods.

Algeria's commitment to bolstering its water security is evident in its ambitious desalination program. This initiative has successfully elevated the share of desalinated water in national consumption from 20% to an impressive 42%. Furthermore, several new desalination plants are currently under construction in various wilayas, including Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Tizi Ouzou, Chlef, Jijel, and Skikda. Currently, 16 wilayas are supplied by 19 stations and numerous monobloc units.

The national vision projects that by 2030, the rate of supply from these desalination stations will reach 60%, with an annual production capacity of 2 billion cubic meters, expanding the program to encompass 35 wilayas. This trajectory signifies a progressive transformation of the national water model, especially crucial given the increasing strategic importance of water in the face of climate change.

Beyond infrastructure, Algeria's comprehensive water strategy emphasizes integrated management, encompassing the protection of soils and forests, watershed management, and public education on water conservation. Experts also highlight the potential of cogeneration—linking desalination with agricultural production in coastal zones—to reorient dam waters inland and support agriculture. Additionally, the reuse of treated wastewater could save nearly 0.9 billion cubic meters of water, while modern irrigation techniques like drip irrigation promise savings of 10% to 20%.

Related topics: Algeria water, desalination plants, Eid al-Adha water supply, water security Algeria, hydraulic system, water management

DZWatch provides English-language coverage of Algeria-focused developments for international readers.

DZWatch reports Algeria’s triumph in ensuring stable water supply during Eid al-Adha, a success driven by new desalination plants and strategic water…

[50

post-61787","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economie-news
["GET
