Households across most regions of Algeria experienced continuous water flow throughout the three days of Eid, eliminating the usual anxieties associated with heightened consumption and post-sacrifice cleaning.

Algeria water security achievements

Families on the ground reported a notable change: no need to pre-fill containers or constantly monitor water pressure. The consistent availability of water allowed for the smooth execution of all tasks required by the Feast of Sacrifice, signaling a significant improvement in the nation's hydraulic management.

This stability is not merely coincidental. While recent rainfall has positively impacted dam levels, providing a vital boost to the national hydraulic system, the primary driver behind this transformation has been the strategic deployment of new seawater desalination stations. Operational in key coastal wilayas such as Oran, Tipasa, Boumerdès, Bejaïa, and El Tarf, these facilities have fundamentally altered the water supply landscape. They have introduced substantial additional volumes of potable water, significantly reducing reliance on dam reserves, which are often vulnerable to drought periods.

Experts at DZWatch highlight that major water transfer projects, the utilization of non-conventional water sources, and especially desalination, now form the pillars of Algeria's water security. The ongoing public program for seawater desalination has notably increased this resource's contribution from 20% to an impressive 42% of Algeria's total water consumption.

Looking ahead, further desalination plants are under construction in several wilayas, including Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Tizi Ouzou, Chlef, Jijel, and Skikda. Currently, 16 wilayas are supplied by 19 stations and various monoblock units. Projections indicate that the contribution of these stations to the national water supply is expected to reach 60% by 2030, with a target production of 2 billion cubic meters per year, as the national program extends to 35 wilayas. This evolution reflects a progressive transformation of Algeria's national hydraulic model, crucial in an era where climate change makes water management increasingly strategic.

The expert community stresses that water management extends beyond mere infrastructure. It necessitates an integrated program encompassing soil and forest protection, watershed management, and a renewed emphasis on water conservation through public information, training, and education. Simultaneously, actions must focus on resource mobilization, water economy, erosion control, and flood prevention. The implementation of co-generation (desalination and agriculture) is also advocated, particularly in coastal areas, to link energy production with desalination. This approach is set to redirect some dam waters towards the interior and high plateaus, offering substantial support for agriculture. Additionally, the reuse of treated wastewater could save nearly 0.9 billion cubic meters of water, while modern irrigation techniques like drip irrigation promise 10-20% savings.

Related topics: Algeria water supply, desalination plants, Eid al-Adha, water management, hydraulic infrastructure, national development

DZWatch provides English-language coverage of Algeria-focused developments for international readers.

Algeria achieved seamless water supply during Eid al-Adha, marking a significant improvement due to strategic investments in desalination plants and…

[50

post-61819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economie-news
["GET
