Algeria has launched a nationwide campaign focused on enhancing health and safety standards in the workplace, with initiatives rolling out across multiple provinces in the country's western regions. The campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, operates under the impactful slogan: "The worker's dignity and their physical and psychological safety are the foundation of a successful work environment."<\/p>\n
This vital initiative aims to significantly reduce and prevent workplace accidents and occupational illnesses across diverse sectors of economic activity. In Oran, the provincial Labour Inspectorate hosted an in-depth seminar dedicated to professional health, safety, and well-being. Attendees included representatives from the National Social Security Fund for Salaried Workers (CNAS), specialized occupational risk prevention bodies like the Organisation for the Prevention of Professional Risks in Building and Hydraulic Activities (OPREBATPH), the National Institute for Occupational Risk Prevention, occupational health services, and legal experts.<\/p>\n
Bouakkez Laradj, the Labour Inspector for Oran, highlighted that the campaign, scheduled to run until July 1st, is fundamentally geared towards embedding a strong culture of health and safety at work sites and promoting effective risk prevention strategies. He detailed that the campaign involves extensive joint field visits to economic enterprises, aiming to impress upon them the critical importance of improving working conditions and mitigating occupational hazards. The Oran Labour Inspectorate aims to engage a broad spectrum of employers and employees during this period.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the proactive measures, Mr. Bouakkez noted that Oran had unfortunately recorded 11 fatal workplace accidents among construction workers by early May. He attributed these tragedies primarily to the non-use of personal protective equipment and employer negligence regarding workplace safety standards.<\/p>\n
Abdelkrim Djellat, Director of the CNAS Oran agency, emphasized that the campaign seeks to bolster a culture of prevention and raise awareness of the rights and obligations concerning workplace health and safety, thereby protecting worker dignity. He affirmed that this initiative underscores the state's commitment to enhancing its social dimension through public policies designed to safeguard workers, who are recognised as pivotal actors in national development.<\/p>\n
In Sidi Bel-Abbes, the local CNAS agency also hosted a similar information and awareness seminar on professional, physical, and psychological health and safety at work. Fadia Oulha\u00e7i, the communications officer for the agency, explained that this event is part of the broader national campaign, coordinated by bodies responsible for occupational risk prevention, the General Directorate of Civil Service and Administrative Reform, and the General Directorate of Labour Inspection.<\/p>\n
Ms. Oulha\u00e7i elaborated that the campaign's core objective is to foster awareness about the necessity of ensuring a secure, stable, and healthy work environment. She stressed that safeguarding the physical and mental health of workers is both a constitutional right and a collective responsibility, crucial for boosting productivity and enhancing administrative and economic efficiency. The discussions covered legal and constitutional frameworks for worker protection, collective responsibility for health and well-being, inter-agency coordination for safety compliance, and the positive correlation between mental health and workplace productivity.<\/p>\n
