Algeria's Minister of Water Resources, Lunis Bouzguza, highlighted on Monday in Algiers the significant strides the nation has made in bolstering its water security. These advancements are primarily driven by the execution of a new program, endorsed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which prioritizes enhancing seawater desalination activities while simultaneously optimizing traditional water resources.<\/p>\n
During the inauguration of the 21st edition of the "SIWIPOLITECH" International Water and Environment Exhibition, held at the Palais des Expositions in Algiers, Minister Bouzguza detailed plans for three new desalination plants in western Algeria, located in Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem. Each plant is projected to have a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. Crucially, these facilities will supply desalinated seawater to inland provinces such as El Bayadh, Tiaret, Saida, and Naama, aiming to achieve water balance for their populations in the near future.<\/p>\n
Algeria currently operates 19 desalination units with substantial production capacity, supplying 16 northern provinces with desalinated seawater. Additionally, three inland provinces \u2013 Blida, Bouira, and Sidi Bel Abb\u00e8s \u2013 have received this vital resource as an initial phase.<\/p>\n
The Minister also confirmed a recent surplus of water in the southern provinces, largely due to enhanced groundwater utilization supported by desalination stations in Tindouf and Tamanrasset. Large-scale water transfer networks are also in place to cover the needs of provinces that previously experienced shortages.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the Minister received a briefing on the activities, achievements, and strategic projects of the Algerian Company for Water Desalination, a subsidiary of Sonatrach. He lauded the company's pivotal role in strengthening national water security and supporting state efforts to ensure sustainable water supply.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, the Algerian Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) launched its AI-powered application, "Qatrat AI." This innovative tool is designed for the digital management of water networks, utilizing artificial intelligence to boost water distribution efficiency, detect network faults, and anticipate leaks, thereby ensuring continuous service delivery.<\/p>\n
