Algeria and Niger have solidified their energy sector collaboration with the signing of three significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between subsidiaries of the Algerian national oil and gas company, Sonatrach, and Niger's national petroleum company, SONIDEP.<\/p>\n
The high-profile ceremony, held at Sonatrach's general headquarters in Algiers, was presided over by Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Niger's Minister of Petroleum, Hassane Hamadou. The event underscored the commitment of both nations to strengthening South-South cooperation and developing a strategic partnership.<\/p>\n
The MoUs cover crucial areas within the hydrocarbon industry. The first agreement, between Sonatrach's geophysical subsidiary, Enafor, and SONIDEP, focuses on seismic data acquisition and processing within Niger. This initiative aims to bolster exploration efforts and enhance the development of Niger's oil and gas resources.<\/p>\n
The second MoU, signed by Sonatrach's drilling subsidiary, Enterprise Nationale de Forage (Enafor), and SONIDEP, will establish a joint venture dedicated to oil and gas drilling operations in Niger. This collaboration is set to boost the technical and operational capabilities of both companies and foster the growth of the mining and petroleum sector in Niger.<\/p>\n
The third MoU involves Sonatrach's marketing and distribution arm, Naftal, and SONIDEP. It aims to enhance the distribution of petroleum products in Niger, including the establishment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations and implementing training programs. Furthermore, this agreement includes the formation of a joint venture for the manufacturing, formulation, storage, and distribution of bitumen, which will support infrastructure development projects and economic growth in Niger.<\/p>\n
Officials from both countries emphasized that these agreements represent a new phase in Algerian-Nigerien partnership within the energy sector, reflecting a shared ambition to expand cooperation and investment. They highlighted the utilization of Algeria's recognized expertise across the entire oil and gas value chain.<\/p>\n
These accords are also in line with a previously established understanding between Sonatrach and SONIDEP, which seeks to develop mutually beneficial joint projects, facilitate technology transfer, and build capacity, thereby supporting economic development and reinforcing the principles of African cooperation and solidarity.<\/p>\n
