This comes in response to what a conceptual note for the meeting described as widespread non-compliance with these critical legal frameworks.

Vanessa Fraser, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, was slated to present the Secretary-General's annual report. She was joined by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell and a youth civil society representative, underscoring the broad commitment to this critical issue.

According to the report, the UN verified 38,558 grave violations impacting 24,174 children throughout 2025. This alarming figure represents the highest number of affected children since the establishment of the Children and Armed Conflict agenda three decades ago.

The six grave violations meticulously tracked by the Security Council include the recruitment and use of children, killing and maiming, abduction, rape and other forms of sexual violence, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access.

UN officials are expected to highlight the escalating use of explosive weapons in populated areas, along with drones and unexploded ordnance. These factors significantly exacerbate child casualties and severely undermine access to education, healthcare, and life-saving assistance for young populations.

The session is anticipated to conclude with renewed calls for enhanced political and financial backing for the child protection agenda in conflicts, stronger monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and resolute protection for schools and hospitals. These appeals come at a time when the United Nations and humanitarian organizations face increasing financial pressures globally.

Related topics: Children in armed conflict, UN Security Council, child protection, grave violations, humanitarian law, global conflicts

DZWatch provides English-language coverage of Algeria-focused developments for international readers.

The UN Security Council convened its annual debate on children and armed conflict, revealing a record high in grave violations against children…

[44

post-64255","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
