South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his country\u2019s long-standing support for the Sahrawi people\u2019s right to self-determination and their pursuit of freedom and full independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS), President Ramaphosa made the remarks on Friday while receiving Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs Mohamed Yeslem Beissat in Pretoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting, the South African president emphasized that his country\u2019s position is rooted in its own history of liberation and remains firmly committed to defending the right of peoples to self-determination. He stressed that this approach is consistent with the founding principles of the African Union and with relevant international legitimacy and United Nations resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For his part, the Sahrawi foreign minister briefed President Ramaphosa on the latest developments concerning the Western Sahara issue at the political and diplomatic levels. He highlighted what he described as the continued struggle of the Sahrawi people to complete the decolonization process in what supporters of the Sahrawi cause consider the last remaining colony in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beissat also discussed the challenges facing the political process, referring to what he described as obstacles and actions by Morocco that, according to the Sahrawi side, hinder efforts aimed at allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence. Morocco has consistently maintained its sovereignty claim over Western Sahara and rejects this characterization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting, the Sahrawi minister delivered a written message from Sahrawi President and Polisario Front Secretary-General Brahim Ghali to President Ramaphosa. The message focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and South Africa, as well as enhancing consultation and coordination on issues of common interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting reflects the continued diplomatic engagement between South Africa and the Sahrawi leadership regarding regional and African affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
