Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf participated on Tuesday, via videoconference, in a ministerial meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting focused on combating terrorism and violent extremism in Africa and examined ways to strengthen continental efforts at both institutional and operational levels. Discussions notably addressed the African Union\u2019s Strategic Action Plan for Counter-Terrorism for the 2026\u20132030 period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plan incorporates proposals presented by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in his capacity as the African Union\u2019s Champion for the prevention and combating of terrorism and violent extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his address, Attaf stressed the need to make better use of existing African institutions and mechanisms to develop a comprehensive and integrated approach to counter-terrorism. He highlighted the changing nature of terrorist organizations, which have become more adaptable and increasingly connected to organized crime, illegal trafficking and modern technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attaf recalled President Tebboune\u2019s repeated warnings that terrorism has become a major threat to Africa\u2019s security and a serious obstacle to its development. He said this situation requires the African Union to thoroughly adapt its strategies and responses to the evolving threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Algerian minister also called for stronger cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations. He recalled Algeria\u2019s efforts during its term on the UN Security Council, particularly its contribution to the presidential statement adopted in January 2025 on combating terrorism in Africa. The statement strengthened cooperation between African institutions and the United Nations in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attaf concluded by expressing Algeria\u2019s confidence in Africa\u2019s ability to defeat terrorism. He stressed that success requires stronger state institutions, properly equipped security services, effective action against the root causes of extremism and reinforced international partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
