Australia\u2019s ruling Labor Party has reaffirmed its support for the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination, in accordance with United Nations resolutions and international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The position was included in a resolution adopted during the Australian Labor Party\u2019s 50th National Conference, held in Adelaide from July 23 to 25, 2026. The conference is the party\u2019s highest decision-making forum and plays a central role in shaping its political platform and priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The resolution expressed strong support for United Nations efforts to enable the people of Western Sahara to exercise what it described as their inalienable right to self-determination and reiterated the party\u2019s longstanding position in favor of a peaceful and just settlement of the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Labor Party also called for an expansion of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, known as MINURSO, to include independent monitoring and reporting on human rights conditions in the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, the resolution called for the immediate and unconditional release of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mohamed Fadel Kamal, the Polisario Front representative in Australia and the South Pacific region, welcomed the resolution after participating in the conference. He said the decision reflected what he described as the Australian Labor Party\u2019s consistent commitment to international law and United Nations principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamal also welcomed the call to broaden MINURSO\u2019s responsibilities, arguing that independent human rights monitoring could strengthen international oversight in Western Sahara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
