Senior officials from both countries and members of the visiting Libyan delegation attended the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two sides discussed cooperation in seawater desalination, drinking-water production, wastewater treatment, flood protection, professional training, and the exchange of technical expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bouzegza said the close relations between Algeria and Libya, combined with their technical and human capabilities, could support a successful model of regional cooperation in water management. He added that Algeria was committed to sharing its experience and establishing a joint committee to oversee mutually beneficial projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officials also discussed the consultation mechanism covering the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System shared by Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia. Bouzegza said the mechanism\u2019s next high-level meeting could strengthen scientific cooperation, hydrogeological studies, research, and capacity-building programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting Algeria\u2019s achievements, the minister said access to drinking water had reached 98%, while sewerage network coverage stood at 93%. Algeria has constructed 31 seawater desalination plants, 37 demineralisation facilities, 82 dams, 507 small dams and water-retention structures, and 234 wastewater treatment plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also noted that irrigation infrastructure currently serves approximately 6.1 million hectares of agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oweidan described Algeria as a strategic partner for Libya, citing its technical expertise and advanced water infrastructure, particularly in desalination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libyan minister proposed creating a joint technical committee to identify cooperation priorities, exchange expertise in designing and operating desalination plants\u2014including those powered by renewable energy\u2014and develop joint projects across the water sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both countries said the proposed roadmap would support sustainable development and strengthen their ability to address growing water-security challenges in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Algeria and Libya reaffirmed their shared determination on Tuesday to expand cooperation in water management through a joint roadmap and a draft memorandum of understanding aimed at building a practical and sustainable partnership.
