Algeria and Libya reaffirmed their shared determination on Tuesday to expand cooperation in water management through a joint roadmap and a draft memorandum of understanding aimed at building a practical and sustainable partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement followed a working session in Algiers between Algerian Minister of Water Resources Lounas Bouzegza and his Libyan counterpart, Hosni Mohamed Oweidan. Senior officials from both countries and members of the visiting Libyan delegation attended the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two sides discussed cooperation in seawater desalination, drinking-water production, wastewater treatment, flood protection, professional training, and the exchange of technical expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bouzegza said the close relations between Algeria and Libya, combined with their technical and human capabilities, could support a successful model of regional cooperation in water management. He added that Algeria was committed to sharing its experience and establishing a joint committee to oversee mutually beneficial projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officials also discussed the consultation mechanism covering the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System shared by Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia. Bouzegza said the mechanism\u2019s next high-level meeting could strengthen scientific cooperation, hydrogeological studies, research, and capacity-building programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presenting Algeria\u2019s achievements, the minister said access to drinking water had reached 98%, while sewerage network coverage stood at 93%. Algeria has constructed 31 seawater desalination plants, 37 demineralisation facilities, 82 dams, 507 small dams and water-retention structures, and 234 wastewater treatment plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also noted that irrigation infrastructure currently serves approximately 6.1 million hectares of agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oweidan described Algeria as a strategic partner for Libya, citing its technical expertise and advanced water infrastructure, particularly in desalination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Libyan minister proposed creating a joint technical committee to identify cooperation priorities, exchange expertise in designing and operating desalination plants\u2014including those powered by renewable energy\u2014and develop joint projects across the water sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
