The integrated phosphate project has entered a new phase with Sonatrach's signing of two engineering, supply, and construction contracts. This strategic facility is recognized as a pillar of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's prospective vision for the nation. The initiative aims to leverage Algeria's capabilities, particularly its mining resources, as a foundation for a new approach to national economic development, benefiting future generations through economic diversification and the strategic utilization of resources to enhance national economic sovereignty. The recently signed contracts involve Sonatrach and the Algerian Fertilizer Company on one side, and Italy's Saipem and China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) on the other, covering the project's initial phase. This phase encompasses a phosphate extraction and enrichment complex in Bled El Hadba, Tebessa, with an annual capacity of 5.5 million tons, alongside an integrated industrial complex in Oued El Kebrit, Souk Ahras, for the production of phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers. Additionally, port facilities in Annaba are part of this development. The project is set for rapid execution under an EPC Fast Track model, with the first quantities of enriched phosphate expected by the first quarter of 2027, followed by fertilizer production commencing in the last quarter of the same year. President Tebboune has continuously monitored the project since its inception, issuing directives for phosphate exports from Bled El Hadba by March 2027 and commissioning the Minister of Mines and Mining Industries to complete the mining pier at Annaba port.<\/p>\n
The integrated project aligns with a vision that enhances industrialization, creates added value, and promotes non-hydrocarbon exports. It is projected to produce approximately 6 million tons annually of enriched phosphate and 4 million tons of fertilizers, including DAP, MAP, NPK, and urea, along with strategic industrial materials such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and ammonia. This ambitious undertaking is anticipated to create about 12,000 direct jobs, particularly in the wilayas of Tebessa, Souk Ahras, Skikda, and Annaba. Key supporting infrastructure includes the 422 km Eastern Mining Railway connecting Bled El Hadba to Annaba port, and the expansion of Annaba port to accommodate large-capacity vessels, positioning Annaba as a global logistical hub capable of attracting major international shipping companies and increasing the competitiveness of national mining products in foreign markets.
