Tosyali Algerie's second direct reduction module has set a new world record for monthly direct reduced iron (DRI) production. Located in Bethioua, Oran province, the module produced 248,601 tonnes in May, marking the highest monthly output ever recorded by a single Midrex plant, according to a statement from technology supplier Midrex Technologies. This module also established a worldwide benchmark for average hourly production from January through May, exceeding its design capacity.<\/p>\n
This achievement builds on previous successes, as the same module produced 2.43 million tonnes during its first full year in 2025, identified by Midrex as the highest annual output from a single direct reduction module globally. Tosyali Algerie has become Algeria's largest exporter outside the hydrocarbon sector, generating substantial net export revenue, and stands as Turkey's biggest industrial investment abroad. The company consistently breaks world direct reduced iron production records, having done so every year since 2020.<\/p>\n
The plant significantly contributes to the national economy as the largest private sector employer in Algeria, providing direct employment for nearly 6,000 individuals, with plans to expand to 8,000 direct employees and over 15,000 indirect jobs by 2027. With a current production capacity of 6 million tonnes per year, targeting 8 million tonnes, the facility integrates 17 units and is expanding further. Its capability to operate on natural gas and potential for 100 percent hydrogen use positions it for future decarbonization efforts in the steel industry. Furthermore, the company is developing projects for upstream iron ore processing in B\u00e9char and Tindouf province, reinforcing Algeria's industrial self-sufficiency.
