This shift aligns with India's growing economic presence in Africa, where its cumulative investments reached approximately $75 billion between 1996 and 2024. Algeria, leveraging its natural resources, strategic location, expansive market, and expanding connections with African and European markets, is well-positioned to benefit from India's economic expansion on the continent.

The relationship is no longer limited to commercial exchanges or energy exports, now encompassing diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, agricultural equipment, mining, phosphates, fertilizers, energy, engineering, railways, digitalization, and space. This dynamic follows significant historical political and diplomatic ties rooted in the Non-Aligned Movement era, which provided a strong foundation for developing economic relations. A notable milestone in this progression was the visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Algeria in October 2024, which spurred new avenues for bilateral economic and investment cooperation. Algeria's May 2025 membership in the New Development Bank, of which India is a founding nation, further enhances financial collaboration opportunities for major projects.

Key sectors poised for enhanced cooperation include energy, where Algeria's expertise in oil and gas can merge with India's need for diversified energy sources, potentially expanding into joint ventures in petrochemicals, renewables, and hydrogen. Phosphates also present significant opportunities, with Algeria's resources meeting India's demand for agricultural products and fertilizers, fostering potential joint production for both Algerian and African markets. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical sector sees a robust partnership, highlighted by the participation of 64 Indian companies in the 2025 Maghreb Pharma exhibition and a delegation of 65 Indian pharmaceutical firms visiting Algeria in January 2026. This collaboration facilitates joint production and technology transfer, positioning Algeria as a potential hub for Indian pharmaceutical industries in Africa.

The confluence of Algeria's resources and energy capabilities with India's industrial and technological expertise creates a complementary partnership rather than a competitive one. India seeks to bolster its presence in Africa, while Algeria aims to expand its economic influence within the continent. Algeria's unique geographical position, Mediterranean coastlines, extensive borders with Sahel countries, and developing infrastructure make it an attractive production and export base for Indian companies targeting both the Algerian and broader African markets. This diversification, spanning from energy and phosphates to pharmaceuticals, agricultural equipment, and advanced technology like AI and space applications, signifies a promising future for Algerian-Indian relations, transforming them into a comprehensive productive, investment, and technological partnership.

Algerian-Indian economic ties are expanding beyond traditional trade, fostering new investment, technology transfer, and joint production across diverse sectors.

[1

post-68679","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-algeria
["GET
