This development follows a meeting in Algiers between Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons and the executive president of Saudi Abunayyan Holding, where opportunities for partnership in industrial investment, specifically in seawater desalination equipment, were examined. The meeting built upon earlier discussions focused on implementing Algeria's national seawater desalination program, with the Saudi ambassador to Algeria and the CEO of Algerian Desalination Company (ADC) also in attendance.

During the meeting, Abunayyan Holding presented proposals aimed at expanding its investment and industrial presence in Algeria. The Saudi group expressed its interest in creating an industrial center for assembly and maintenance services specializing in seawater desalination equipment and materials. Such a center would support the sustainability of strategic projects and provide local technical and logistical services. Furthermore, the company proposed establishing a branch of the Energy and Water Academy in Algeria to facilitate knowledge transfer and develop capabilities in managing and operating desalination plants. Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, welcomed these initiatives, highlighting their alignment with the Algerian government's goals to increase national integration rates, localize vital industries, and create sustainable employment opportunities. He affirmed his sector's readiness, through ADC and relevant supervisory structures, to provide necessary facilities and conditions for these strategic projects.

Algeria has significantly invested in seawater desalination since the 2000s, with the first plant inaugurated in 2008. Under current leadership, the country has prioritized increasing potable water supply from desalination plants, targeting 42% for populations within 150 km of the coast, with a goal to reach 60% by 2032 and extend connections up to 250 km inland. Currently, Algeria operates 28 desalination stations, with studies underway for six new facilities, representing a total investment of $8 billion in this sector. A key focus for Algeria is the local production of membranes and essential spare parts, which are the most costly components in maintaining these stations. This strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia, a global leader in seawater desalination with 41 plants and supplying over 80% of its potable water, is expected to enhance Algeria's capabilities through technological transfer and industrial localization.

Algeria and Saudi Arabia are progressing towards establishing a joint industrial hub, moving beyond initial proposals to a new phase of strategic cooperation.
