This research aims to inform practical regulatory measures to protect the species, which has seen its wild populations significantly decline over the past three decades. The chardonneret, known for its distinctive appearance and singing ability, holds significant popularity in Algeria, leading to a high demand that has put pressure on its numbers.

To understand the market, researchers from several Algerian universities conducted two surveys between 2018 and 2020. The first surveyed 833 goldfinch owners across seven northern Algerian provinces, while the second involved 70 participants at the 2020 European Goldfinch Exhibition in Algiers. Key findings indicated that approximately 90% of owners surveyed were men, with about half being between 19 and 30 years old, suggesting that goldfinch keeping is also prevalent among young males, not solely older, traditional breeders. The study also highlighted the significant economic value of well-trained birds, with prices for some individual chardonnerets reaching up to $7,500.

This elevated price point, coupled with the observation that most birds in the market are sourced from the wild, indicates substantial demand driving increased pressure on wild populations. The researchers concluded that curbing illegal trade should not focus solely on hunters but must also address consumer demand. They proposed strategies such as public awareness campaigns in schools and on social media, alongside interventions targeting consumer behavior, to reduce the desire for wild-caught birds.

The study's recommendations align with expert opinions, with Dr. Mohamed Adel Qadri, a zoology professor at Cairo University, emphasizing that legal prohibition alone is insufficient. He affirmed that addressing consumer behavior through tailored awareness campaigns, highlighting the chardonneret's ecological role, is crucial. The bird, which primarily feeds on seeds, particularly those of wild plants like thistles, is an integral part of the ecosystem's food web and plant-bird interactions, making its conservation vital for environmental balance.

Algerian researchers have conducted a study on the European goldfinch (chardonneret) market dynamics to inform conservation efforts for the endangered species.
