Many countries globally, including France, are currently grappling with escalating fuel prices, a challenge notably absent in Algeria<\/a>. This resilience stems from a national strategy<\/a> implemented over recent years, which has prioritized self-sufficiency in petroleum products. Algeria has successfully transitioned from a net importer of diesel and gasoline to a producer capable of meeting its own consumption needs, supported by state subsidies. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune<\/a> has previously highlighted the nation's independence from gasoline imports as a significant achievement.<\/p>\n

The global energy<\/a> market has seen significant disruption, with international conflicts affecting supply routes and pushing oil prices above $100 per barrel, consequently driving up fuel costs. For instance, diesel prices in France reached historic highs, while the United States also experienced record peaks for diesel. In stark contrast, Algeria has remained entirely insulated from this global energy crisis. Thanks to substantial state subsidies, gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products are readily available across the country at prices among the lowest worldwide, with gasoline sold at 47 dinars per liter and diesel at 31 dinars per liter.<\/p>\n

Algeria benefits from being both a petroleum producer and exporter, further bolstered by significant developments in its refining capabilities. These advancements have ensured that domestic consumption, despite a substantial rise in demand (15 million tons of fuel consumed in 2024, including 11 million tons of diesel), is fully met. The nation's strategy aims to continuously align production capacities with growing consumption, which is projected to reach 41 million tons by 2050. In 2024, petroleum product production increased by 4.4% to 30.5 million tons, covering all national requirements for gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil, along with some lubricants. Additionally, Algeria has enhanced its export capabilities for certain refined products, notably becoming the leading naphtha supplier to South Korea in September 2026.<\/p>\n

The country's robust infrastructure includes five major refineries located in Skikda, Arzew, Algiers, Hassi Messaoud, and Adrar, complemented by a condensation treatment unit in Skikda. Further expanding its capacity, a mega-refinery with an annual capacity of 5 million tons is currently under construction in Hassi Messaoud, alongside ongoing modernization and expansion projects for existing facilities. Algeria also strategically acquired a refinery in Augusta, Italy, in 2018. Following investments for its rehabilitation, this facility became profitable, reporting a turnover of $7.2 billion and net profits of $400 million in 2022.
