The African Union<\/a> Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) has formally commended the efforts of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in combating terrorism and violent extremism. The commendation, issued in a statement adopted during the Council's 1369th ministerial meeting held in New York, specifically recognized President Tebboune<\/a> in his capacity as the African Union\u2019s Champion for Counter-Terrorism. The meeting's agenda focused on good neighborliness<\/a> and regional responses to security and terrorist challenges across Africa, where President Tebboune's contributions to advancing the AU's anti-terrorism agenda were highlighted.<\/p>\n

In its statement, the Council urged the African Union Commission to accelerate the completion of both the African arrest warrant and the African database of terrorists. These initiatives aim to bolster cross-border judicial cooperation, disrupt illicit supply networks, and effectively address the challenge of regional safe havens for terrorist groups. Furthermore, the AU PSC reiterated its request for the AU Commission to develop a continental framework for countering the use of emerging technologies by terrorists, including drones, encrypted platforms, and digital financing. This framework is explicitly based on 'Algeria<\/a>'s Guiding Principles,' which were adopted by the United Nations<\/a> Security Council in January 2025, ensuring alignment with international standards.<\/p>\n

Algeria's steadfast commitment to counter-terrorism was further underscored by Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, during the meeting. He also highlighted Algeria's comprehensive approach, which combines necessary security and military interventions with sustained development, reconciliation efforts, and the strengthening of state institutions, recognizing these as integral to achieving lasting security and stability.
