This strategic pivot was recently highlighted by the participation of Algerian enterprises in the 60th International Exhibition of Marble and Natural Stone (Marmomac) in Verona, Italy. This presence allowed Algerian operators to showcase their capabilities and forge new business connections. A key outcome of this participation was a significant agreement between the Algerian company Sarl Nour and an Italian operator, which paves the way for the export of Algerian marble to the crucial Chinese market.

Under the new agreement, the Italian operator will be responsible for marketing Algerian marble to its Chinese clientele. This approach is expected to enhance the visibility of Algerian products in a vital Asian market and promote the quality and unique characteristics of national marble. This development signals growing international interest in Algerian products and their increasing capacity to integrate into global supply chains. Beyond this specific agreement, Algeria's commitment to expanding its marble exports is evident in other initiatives, including discussions with the Verona Chamber of Commerce and Industry to facilitate market access in northern Italy, where demand for such products exists.

The pursuit of international markets extends beyond the recent Italian exhibition. In recent years, both public and private operators in the sector have undertaken concrete export operations, elevating the strategy for valuing Algerian marble. For instance, at IATF 2025, the national mining group Sonarem signed a memorandum of understanding for the short-to-medium term export of 600,000 cubic meters of marble to an Egyptian partner. Furthermore, Kristel marble unit, a subsidiary of the National Aggregates Company (ENG), continues its export growth, having shipped 2,000 tonnes of marble to Spain and China in 2025, building on earlier consignments. With estimated reserves of 240 million cubic meters across 15 identified deposits and a national processing capacity of nearly 10 million cubic meters annually, Algeria possesses substantial potential for further development in this sector.

This strategic focus aligns with directives from the President of the Republic, who has called for the urgent development of a national strategy for marble exploration and exploitation. In October 2025, the President issued instructions to prohibit the import of finished marble slabs, while simultaneously initiating new investments and introducing reforms to bolster national production and enhance the value of local resources. The President underscored that marble represents a significant source of foreign currency and job opportunities for young people. Through these sustained efforts, the Algerian marble industry aims to transition from simple resource exploitation to an integrated industrial and commercial strategy, transforming its reserves into a competitive, diversified offering for both national consumption and major international markets.

Algeria’s marble industry is expanding its international presence, with a new agreement facilitating exports to the Chinese market.
