Algiers – The Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, presided over a study day on “Antimicrobial Resistance” at the ministry’s headquarters today, Thursday. The event was attended by the World Health Organization’s representative in Algeria, Nouhou Amadou, along with representatives from various government sectors, experts, and specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his opening remarks, Minister Saihi highlighted the critical importance of addressing antimicrobial resistance, which he described as a “global public health threat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister emphasized the necessity of “avoiding the use of antibiotics without a prescription and consulting a doctor for proper usage.” He pointed out that “the overuse or misuse of antibiotics leads to the development of antibiotic resistance, rendering treatments ineffective.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saihi also underscored the importance of preventive measures, calling for increased awareness among the public, healthcare practitioners, and pharmacists about the responsible use of antibiotics to “ensure the health and safety of citizens.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, the Minister advocated for the establishment of a task force to study antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in hospital settings, aiming to gather precise statistics on their usage and the resulting impacts. He stressed the need for “implementing several measures to combat this phenomenon.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
