Ramallah (Occupied Palestine) \u2013 The permanent representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, officially took Palestine\u2019s new seat in the UN General Assembly, seated alphabetically between Sudan and Sri Lanka, with a sign in front of him reading “State of Palestine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Egypt\u2019s permanent representative to the UN, Osama Abdel Khalek, commented on the occasion, calling it “not just a procedural matter, but a historic moment,” as reported by the Palestinian news agency (WAFA) on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In May, the overwhelming majority of UN General Assembly members voted in favor of granting Palestine full membership status. This followed a veto from the United States in the UN Security Council, which blocked Palestine\u2019s full membership. Despite the veto, the General Assembly passed a resolution granting Palestine additional rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to this resolution, starting from the 79th session of the General Assembly\u2014 which began last Tuesday\u2014 Palestine can now directly submit proposals and amendments and has the right to sit among the full member states based on alphabetical order. Since 2012, Palestine has held the status of “non-member observer state” at the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
