Khenchela<\/strong> \u2013 The Dar\u2019 Association for Culture and Arts<\/strong> from Khenchela, Algeria, secured third place<\/strong> for Best Theatrical Performance<\/strong> at the first edition of the Franciscans International Peace Festival<\/strong>, held in Cairo, Egypt<\/strong>, from October 10 to 18, 2024<\/strong>, according to the association\u2019s president and the director of the awarded performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement to APS<\/strong>, Tarek Louiz<\/strong>, director of the winning play \u201cMaqbara\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cThe Cemetery\u201d), confirmed that the play was honored with third place during the award ceremony on Friday night<\/strong>. The first prize<\/strong> went to \u201cDogs Bark at the Moon\u201d<\/strong> by the Mansoura Cultural Palace troupe from Egypt, while second place<\/strong> was awarded to \u201cGodot\u201d<\/strong> from Jordan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representing Algeria at the festival, the Dar\u2019 Association<\/strong> also won a special acting award<\/strong> for the outstanding performances of the trio: Abdallah Boumaiza<\/strong> (known as \u201cDado\u201d), Tarek Louiz<\/strong>, and Jamal Badawi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Tarek Louiz received the second prize for Best Director<\/strong> for his work on the production. The play\u2019s text was written by Ali Al-Abadi<\/strong>, with Salah Eddine Ben Khalifa<\/strong> handling the scenography, while Munir Mubarakia<\/strong> composed the music and designed the lighting. Jamal Rouibi<\/strong> was responsible for the set design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Story of Life, Death, and Loss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The play \u201cMaqbara\u201d<\/strong> explores the lives of three gravediggers whose relationship with death does not weigh on their psyche; instead, they find joy in their work as each new grave provides them with a livelihood. However, their perspective on death shifts when one of them loses a loved one, confronting them with the bitterness of personal loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting Peace Through Theater<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Franciscans International Peace Festival<\/strong> offers a unique platform for theatrical works from across the Arab world<\/strong>, featuring plays that address social and political issues<\/strong> aimed at promoting peace and cultural understanding<\/strong>. This year\u2019s edition included 14 theatrical performances<\/strong> from countries such as Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, and Syria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous Awards and Recognition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2022<\/strong>, the Dar\u2019 Association for Culture and Arts<\/strong> has already garnered several awards. Last year, the group was recognized at the Zarqa International Festival<\/strong> in Jordan and the Sicaveneria Festival<\/strong> in Tunisia. Additionally, the association received the Cultural Merit Award<\/strong> from Soraya Mouloudji<\/strong>, the Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, during her visit to Khenchela<\/strong> on December 30, 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
